13-JAN-2004 MEETING

Say HI to the new Club Officers:
President: Arnie Winstead
Vice-President: Earl Eblen
Secretary / Treasurer: Dirk Spackman

Meeting Minutes For Desert Divers of Idaho

Meeting of 1/13/04

The second meeting was in Dive Magic's education room. We had 18 members attending. We first ate a potluck meal and then got down to the business of deciding what we wanted to do first to get organized. It was decided that we should elect officers by closed ballot. After nominations and voting Arnie Winstead was elected President, Earl Eblen was elected Vice President and Dirk Spackman was elected Secretary/Treasurer.

The next discussion was about dues. It was unanimously passed that the dues would be $12 per year, to be payed yearly not monthly. Discussion turned to who should pay dues and who in a family should pay dues. Earl made the motion that any diver with at least the Open Water Certification, should pay dues to be a voting member. This was seconded by Jim and passed unanimously.

Larry, from Dive Magic, generously said that Dive Magic would donate an item to either raffle or auction in some manner or a member can donate something for the same purpose at each meeting. It was decided that only members with their dues payed can participate in this. Any moneys taken in will go into the club treasury to be used as seen fit by the club.

Discussion then turned to when the meetings would be held. Jim made the motion that the meetings should continue to be on the 2nd Tuesday of the month to begin at 7:00pm and end at 9:00pm. This was seconded by Earl. It was passed unanimously. The format of the meeting will be a potluck at the first followed by any club business and then a presentation of some kind from one or more of the members or maybe a video. This presentation will be decided at each meeting for the following meeting. Larry said that the DUI rep for Idaho lives near Boise and that we should see about getting Eric Johnson to come and speak to us about safety and decompression issues. This will be pursued.

Next the length of term for the officers was discussed and it was suggested that the term would be 1 year from the first meeting in January of each year. There was no motion but it was voted on as stated and was passed unanimously.

It was then decided that we should name the club. After many good names were suggested by the members, 3 names were voted on and Desert Divers Of Idaho was passed with no dissent. Chris Auth will continue to be the Web Master for the web page and keep it updated with information about the club and members. The web address will be www.ddofid.com.

Some discussion was done about what the club can do to further the understanding of our sport and to make the public aware of the safety concerns. Some suggestions were to put posters in boat and personal water craft shops explaining the meaning of the diver down flag and possibly having a booth at the boat and recreation shows at the Fair Grounds. We will also include Boise Water Sports on our web page and the officers will talk to Charlie and Jim about maybe having some of our meetings at their store. We will also put fliers out about our club at both dive shops. Larry said that he would support this because this is not a "Dive Magic" scuba club but that his organization would help us in any way it could.

The next meeting will be at Dive Magic at 7:00 pm on 2/9/04. There will be a potluck, so don't forget to bring your favorites! The entertainment will be provided with a presentation of Earl's, Michelle's and Dirk's pictures taken at Hoodsport, WA, during their trip there in January.

The first meeting was adjourned at 9:10 pm.

Dirk Spackman, Sec/Treas.

On Tuesday January 27th, Arnie, Earl and Dirk met with Corby Christensen, the boating program manager for the Idaho State Department of Parks and Recreation. We talked about ways that we could help promote diver safety by making boat owners aware of the state laws having to do with the "Diver Down" flag. He was very enthusiastic about working with us on this issue. He offered to help us make posters to be placed at boat docks, boat and other small watercraft dealerships, to include the topic in any presentations given by him or his department and to also help promote our club and scuba diving in general. On February 5-8 he offered to let us share the Departments' booth at the Treasure Valley Boat Show. We are going to do this.

The times are: Noon - 10pm on Thursday and Friday and 10am - 10pm on Saturday and 10am - 6pm on Sunday. If anyone can help us out please contact Arnie, Earl or Dirk. The telephone numbers are on this site, or contact Dive Magic and they will forward it to one of us. We are planning to have a raffle to raise some money for the club and have pictures and sign up sheets for the club. There will also be information about diver safety and Corby said that they would include us in their presentation time. Corby will provide us with exhibitor passes so you can get in free for whenever you can come to sit at the booth.
